Also called Biomedical Technician, Biomedical Engineering Technologist.

Biomedical technologists are those responsible for taking care of equipment and instruments used in healthcare practices. They inspect and install equipment used by doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers for researching, monitoring, diagnosing, and treating illnesses or disorders. They also repair, calibrate, and safety test equipment in order to ensure proper function and safety for both the operator and the patient. They consult with staff to make sure that all equipment is functioning properly, and may demonstrate the proper use of equipment to the staff upon installation. They may also modify or develop devices used in healthcare.

Biomedical technologists may work at hospitals, but are most often found working for equipment manufacturers and repair services. Due to the nature of the job, they are often called to work evening, night, and weekend hours, as well as some holidays in order to maintain the quality of patient care. They also work long hours apart from a forty hour work week, and can be called upon at any time for repairs or maintenance. There is often a great deal of travel involved in this job, driving from repair to repair. Their salary varies, but can range from $38,121 to $45,983, with an average of $41,181. Biomedical technologists usually have an associate’s degree in electronics or Biomedical Equipment Technology, and are usually required to be certified as a Biomedical Equipment Technician.

The outlook for this career is very good, as is the outlook for all careers in the healthcare industry. It is expected to grow as fast as the average for all occupations, though as the population increases and requires various types of healthcare and more technological advances are made in the field of medicine, biomedical technologists will be in very high demand.
