Why Pursue A Certified Nurse Assistant Career?

Certified Nursing Assistants are responsible for the more ordinary and basic care of patients. They have different duties according to experience and type of facility, but most often are responsible for duties such as feeding patients who are unable to feed themselves, preparing food trays, bathing, grooming and dressing patients, helping patients move about, preventing bedsores, measuring liquid and solid intake and output, measuring and recording vital signs, making beds, and observing the patients’ mental, physical, and emotional conditions and reporting them to the nursing or medical staff. Those employed in nursing homes are most often the primary caregivers, and establish ongoing relationships with those they care for.

Certified Nursing Assistants most often work in nursing homes. Because of the nature of their work, they often work overtime, as well as evenings, weekends, and holidays. Their salaries vary from place to place, but the average salary of a CNA is around $20,500 yearly. The outlook for this job is quite good, especially as the baby boom generation advances into old age and increases the demand for those skilled in such care. As such, there will be an estimated 19,800 jobs created for Certified Nursing Assistants by 2008.

To become a Certified Nursing Assistant, one must have 100 hours of clinical practice and 50 hours of classroom instruction. Certification by the Department of Health Services requires the following: health screening and TB test, completion of 150 hours of training in a program approved by the Department of Health Services, criminal background check, and successful completion of a nurse assistant certification and competency exam. Certified Nursing Assistants must also complete 48 hours of in-service training or college courses every two years to renew their license.
