Traveling nurses are licensed RNs who travel from place to place in order to fill shortages in hospitals. They fill in where needed, for coverage of leaves or staff shortages, for up to thirteen weeks, and are usually employed by staffing companies. The salary is usually greater than that of a staff nurse, and usually ranges from $44,000 to $70,000 per year. In California, where demand is higher, a nurse may make $100,000 including overtime. Add this to the benefits paid by staffing companies (401K plans, all travel and housing expenses), and travel nursing is a very lucrative career. Travel nurses who travel from state to state are usually required to acquire any extra licensure necessary to work in that state, or sometimes may be given a temporary license.
